Irish whiskey The Spirit of Ireland

A trip to Ireland is not merely limited to a physical journey it can also be a journey of taste. Irish whiskey is the quintessential taste of Ireland. It is basically Ireland in a bottle. Although it is less famous than its Scottish equivalent, Irish whiskey is worth the trip to Ireland. Irish whiskey is the great equalizer in the life of the Irish, whether they’re Protestant or Catholic, Republicans or monarchists, everyone loves this distilled spirit. Ireland and Scotland though are both claiming to be the original home of “uisce beatha”, or water of life (the Celts called it Aqua Vitae). According to legend, St. Patrick brought the art of distilling to Ireland, which he learned from distilling perfumes in the far east. The monks that St. Patrick taught then used it to distill grains. Irish whiskey is traditionally served along with a small glass of chilled water in order to help the throat soothe the fiery sensation in between two sips. A traveller sipping whiskey beside a roaring peat fire on an autumn dusk while looking at the green lushness of Ireland already has the perfect Irish moment he will talk about when he comes back. For those who want to embark on a whiskey tour, the best place to start would be the Old Bushmills Distillery, the oldest of the three active distilleries in the country. The next stop could be a drive to the south to Eire where the most recent distillery, Cooley, is located. It also has the distinction of being the only distillery that’s still locally owned. The third distillery can be found In Cork Country. The Middleton’s Distillery also opened a museum, the Jameson Heritage Centre, that traces the history of Irish whiskey. Visitors who take a tasting tour here also get to receive the world-famous “Qualified Irish Whiskey Taster” certificate. Travelling by car is a great way to reach these three distilleries, just make sure that you don’t drink and drive. Travelling by car is fast become the favorite way for travellers to see the wonders of the country.
